Members elect new GCIU leaders

Members of the GCIU used their mail ballots to elect new leadership to tackle the challenges facing the union and the printing industry in the 21st century.

The Board of Electors certified the count of approximately 26,000 mail ballots on March 24. The administration will take office on June 4.

George Tedeschi, president of Nassau County 406C for 30 years, was elected president with 13,916 votes to 11,770 for James J. Norton, GCIU president since September 1985.

Incumbent Secy.-Treas. Gerald H. Deneau was reelected with 16,354 votes to 9,248 votes for Harold D. Delchamp, president of Washington 285M.

Newly elected without opposition after their nominations were Duncan K. Brown as Canadian vice president and David A. Grabhorn as U.S. vice president. Brown has served as Canadian organizing coordinator since 1986. Canadian Vice Pres. James J. Cowan did not seek reelection. Canadian Region General Board members reelected without opposition after nominations were incumbents George Novak, secretary of Toronto 100M; and Mike R. Zajac, president of Toronto 500M.

Vice presidents reelected were Leonard E. Adams and Lawrence Martinez. Adams received 15,579 votes to 9,899 for opponent Thomas E. Hennigan, an International representative. Martinez received 14,781 votes to 10,692 for opponent James A. Miller, president of Kansas City 235M and a General Board member.

Edward J. Toff, vice president of Philadelphia 14M, defeated incumbent Vice Pres. Garry D. Foreman by a vote of 14,112 to 11,353.

General Board members elected by region are:

Atlantic Region – incumbent Andrew Douglas, Art McCullough, New York 1L vice president; and Edward A. Treacy, president of West Caldwell 612M.

Southern Region – incumbent Thomas L. Jolley of Atlanta 527S.

Central Region – incumbents David R. Jacobs, president of Detroit 2C, and Charles E. Timmel, president of Chicago 458M; and Christopher J. Yatchak, president of Milwaukee – Madison 577M.

Mountain Region – Joyce F. Hurley, president of Twin Cities 1B; and George Osgood, president of St. Paul 1M.

Pacific Region – incumbent Fred Correll, secretary of District Council 2; and Dennis Hayden of Seattle 747M.
