AFL-CIO develops cell phone discount

The secretary-treasurers of the AFL-CIO have developed and negotiated a new discount package for cellular phone service and equipment from AT&T.

The package, which is being offered to AFL-CIO-affiliated local unions and members, provides "deep discounts over most other services and equipment," said GCIU Secy.-Treas. Gerald H. Deneau.

"It's really a good deal for union members," Deneau said. "It demonstrates what can happen when unions throw their purchasing power together."

The AT&T package includes a 10 percent discount off all rate plans for those who either switch their existing AT&T accounts to this program or start new accounts through this program. AT&T rate plans start as low as $14.99. The company's Digital One Rate Plans include all roaming and long distance throughout the United States.

Examples of the discounts on equipment include a Nokia 5160 phone for $69.99; Nokia 6160i for $139.99; Nokia 6162i for $154.99; Nokia 8860 for $409.99; Ericsson LX677 for $29.99; Ericsson LX588 for $44.99; StarTAC 7797 for $149.99; and Mitsi T200 for $34.99. Accessories also are available.

For more information about AT&T's rate plans, services and monthly promotions, call AT&T at 800-388-3235.

To activate service or move existing AT&T service to the AFL-CIO's discount program, you must provide the AT&T service representative with this foundation name and number: American Federation of Labor, 8827.
