GCIU local leader helps a
family in need
A story from Providence 239M demonstrates that union and
community activists are a powerful force when they unite for a good cause.
Local 239M Pres. John Tassoni Jr. is a member of the Elks and Lions clubs in Smithfield, R.I.
When he heard about a family in need due to a medical crisis, he marshaled the members of the
two clubs and organized a fundraiser.
The funds were to help the family of Tammy Vanner, who has undergone three years of treatment
for breast cancer. While treatment costs overran the family's health insurance by some $1,000 a
month, the Vanner family exhausted their savings and eventually lost their house.
Tassoni said the fundraiser proved to be "one of the most touching events to take place in our
town in recent years. Residents and non-residents of the town of Smithfield showed up to lend
their support to a neighbor in need. . . . Because of the caring and dedication of the residents of
Smithfield, this event blossomed from an idea to a reality in just three short weeks."
More than 500 people turned out for a macaroni dinner, raffles, and music held at the Smithfield
Elks Lodge. Much of the food, raffle prizes, and music were donated.
Surpassing the organizers' expectations, the fundraiser, combined with other donations, raised
more than $28,000.
Tassoni said the money will help the Vanner family pay off some of their debt, although not all.
He said the funds will help give Tammy's husband Frank "a little peace of mind knowing that he
won't have to work 70 or 80 hours a week to get out of debt."
Tassoni said GCIU members who wish to make a donation should make checks payable to
Tammy Vanner, c/o Bank RI, 445 Putnam Pike, Greenville, R.I. 02828.
