'We're going to win at the
Union-Tribune'
"We are going to win in San Diego" was the defiant report of San
Diego 432M Pres. Jack Finneran to the GCIU's Fifth Quadrennial Convention delegates.
Finneran and local Secy. Jeff Alger told the delegates that, despite management stonewalling, the
pressmen at the San Diego Union-Tribune were solidly backing the leadership efforts to win them
a fair contract at the Copley Press newspaper.
Finneran and Alger told the convention about the success of the ads on local television explaining
the union's struggle for a fair contract that have resulted in more than 50,000 cancellations from
sympathetic subscribers.
Alger thanked the convention delegates for past support and asked that they continue to help
"keep the sword in our hands" in dealing with management's union-busting efforts.
A motion from the floor was passed to hold a collection for the local and delegates contributed
more than $6,000 in cash plus pledges for thousands more dollars.
