Bonelli started her union membership in 1943 as a bookbinder in New York City. She was an active participant in local union activities and helped shape the consolidation of her local 43B and other New York locals into what is now GCIU New York 119/43B. In the 1970s, she was elected as a GAIU International vice president and stayed in office after the 1983 merger into the present-day GCIU. She retired in June 1988. During her time as an international officer, Bonelli was particularly active in women's issues and worked to improve career possibilities in the printing industry for women members. In addition, she served on many national committees on the employment of the handicapped.
