GCIU locals across N. America pitch in;
New York 1L gives $25,000 for victims

New York 1L Pres. Patrick LoPresti, right, presents two checks to New York City Central Labor Council Secy. Ted Jacobsen for the CLC's Disaster Relief Fund. The first check for $25,000 was from 1L; the second check for $1,000 came from sister local Montpelier-Barre 745C. Many other GCIU locals across the United States and Canada made donations to help relief efforts for terrorist victims' families.
New York 1L was among the first major donors to the New York City Central Labor Council's disaster relief fund following the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks that killed more than 6,000 people.

At a meeting shortly after the trade towers disaster, Local 1L members approved a contribution of $25,000, according to 1L Pres. Patrick LoPresti.

And their donation was supplemented by $1,000 sent to them by Pres. Daniel Bush and the members of Montpelier-Barre 745C.

Vancouver 525M contributed $1,000 (U.S.) to the Canadian Labour Congress' International Activities Fund/U.S. Tragedy. Local 525M Pres. Robert Jennings said in a letter:

"Words cannot express our deepest and most profound sadness in the aftermath of this tragedy."

The International sent a check for $5,000 for the relief effort to the Union Community Fund at the AFL-CIO.

From across the border in Canada, other contributions were directed to help victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The Canadian Federation and Specialties Conference of the GCIU sent a check for $500 to accompany a collection from the floor of their September conference.

Canadian conferees also sent a resolution deploring the "senseless attacks" and a pledge that the conference "will actively promote and participate in any and all ways possible in aiding our Brothers and Sisters across the border."

The employees of Nassau County 406C contributed to Newsday Charities, that promised matching funds from the corporation to aid in the disaster relief effort in New York City.

GCIU members throughout the United States and Canada made individual contributions in their home towns and cities to help victims' survivors of the terrorists' attacks.
