Ten GCIU youths win
DeAndrade scholarships

Ten sons and daughters of GCIU members in five regions of the United States and Canada were chosen to receive Anthony J. DeAndrade scholarships for the 2002-2003 academic year.

Named after the late president of the IPPAU, the scholarship awards are for $2,000 each, payable in awards of $500 each year.

GCIU Pres. George Tedeschi praised the high caliber of this year's applications. "All of the applicants showed great promise," he said. "We wish success for their academic pursuits to all of the applicants and to the scholarship winners."

To be eligible for the DeAndrade scholarships, applicants must be a son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter or legally adopted child of a GCIU member who has more than one year of continuous membership.

Applicants were judged on the basis of their academic record, including SAT or ACT scores and high school grades and activities. Applicants also were required to write an essay for the panel of experienced educators who served as judges for the scholarships. Two winners were chosen from each of five geographical regions.

Winners of the 2002 Anthony J. DeAndrade scholarships are:

Region 1: Michael J. Giuffre, son of James Giuffre, Nassau County 406C; and Rebecca D. Kreider, daughter of Edward A. Kreider, Reading 160M.

Region 2: Carly M. DiVito, daughter of Michael J. DiVito, Chicago 458M; and Rupal V. Vora, daughter of Vijay Vora, Des Moines 727S.

Region 4: Cassandra Dunsire, daughter of Alexander M. Dunsire Jr., Aberdeen 262C; and Jason C. Jorel, son of Randolph D. Jorel, St. Louis 6M.
