Canadian locals meet to train leaders

Some 130 local officers and shop stewards improved their skills in bargaining and other key areas during a three-day training course sponsored by Toronto locals 100M and 500M.

For the first time, the five-year-old local union education program, held at the Delawana Resort in Ontario, also incorporated GCIU Organizing Institute training.

Participants heard addresses by GCIU Pres. George Tedeschi, GCIU Secy.-Treas. Gerald H. Deneau, Vice Presidents Duncan K. Brown, and Edward J. Toff, Local 100M Pres. Brian Fletcher and Secy.-Treas. and General Board member George Novak, and Local 500M Pres. Mike R. Zajac.

In addition to organizing, courses in the program included bargaining, grievance handling, health and safety, and leadership skills.

Participants in the training were from locals 500M and 100M, London 517M, Montreal 41M, Edmonton 255C, Regina 75M, Halifax 506M, and Saskatoon 721M.

Instructors for the Organizing Institute were GCIU Organizing Coordinator Bert Haft, GCIU Contracts and Research Dir. Alan M. Tate, and Local 500M Vice Pres. Mike Drimmie.

Teaching the local union skill courses were: International Reps. Colin D. Lang and Joseph M. O'Connor; Exec. Vice Pres. Norman Beattie, Vice Pres. James Bodie, John Laurie, and Jim Hagarth of Toronto 500M; and Daniel Huziak of Local 100M.

Shop stewards, local officers, and instructors celebrate the completion of the training program in local union skills during a weekend course sponsored by Toronto locals 100M and 500M.
