Workers resented by Washington 72C at IPI Lithography & Graphics in Upper Marlboro, Md., struck the shop Aug. 1 to protest the company's refusal to reach a fair contract. After winning a representation election, the local was certified as the bargaining agent for the IPI workers in January 2002. A year and a half later, multiple bargaining sessions produced no acceptable contract. Local 72C Pres. Paul Atwill said the issues involve low wages, the high cost of health insurance ($750 per month for a family), no bereavement leave, no sick leave, no pension fund, and no job security. In addition, the company has terminated employees after their first anniversary with the company to avoid wage increases and annual leave, he said. "These employees have been working under despicable conditions," Atwill said. "We would like to ask all union members to support these workers in their efforts."
