Joint conference delegates bid goodbye to retiring Detroit 13N Pres. Jack Howe with a standing ovation.

Howe, this year's Midwestern States representative, once again thanked the GCIU for the continued support during the recent newspapers strike. "We could have never reached a contract in Detroit without you."

Bob Heckart, Local 13N delegate to the North American Newspaper Conference, praised Howe. He said it was Howe's "strength and conviction that held us together, shoulder-to-shoulder, in the heat of the sun." He credited Howe with "turning the tables on Gannett and Knight Ridder."

Thanks to Howe, fewer than 10 members crossed the picket line during the strike. Heckart deemed Howe "the greatest leader the Detroit local has ever had."
