Newspaper conference pioneer Mylett is cited

Kevin Toomey, host local Boston 3N secretary-treasurer, presented invited guest Edward J. Mylett with his 50-year union pin at the joint North American newspaper/commercial/specialties conference.

Toomey, admitting the pin was seven years late, said the newspaper conference, which Mylett helped establish, was the "perfect opportunity to honor Mylett."

He was introduced to a standing ovation. Mylett was elected vice president of the first North American Newspaper Conference in 1957. He spoke of meeting secretly in the beginning, fearing that the International union would "have never allowed" such an event.

Mylett was Boston 3N president from 1955 to 1959 and again from 1974 to 1988. He is proud of how large the conference has grown and how strong it has become.

He urged the delegates to fight problems straight on. He acknowledged that the times might be different, but some of the uncertainties remain the same.

Currently employed by U.S. Ink as a consultant, Mylett, on behalf of local retirees, wished the delegates "all the luck in the world."
