Ten winners chosen for GCIU scholarships

How to apply

The Anthony J. DeAndrade Scholarships are open to applicants who are high school seniors graduating in January or June of 2004 and recent high school graduates who will not have completed more than a half year of college by Sept. 1, 2004. Previous DeAndrade scholarship winners are not eligible.
To be eligible, applicants must be a son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter or legally adopted child of a GCIU member who has more than one year of continuous membership.
Application forms will be available at GCIU local union offices by Oct. 1, 2003. All applications must be signed by an elected officer of the parent's local union and must carry the local union's seal.
Applications must be postmarked no later than Feb. 15, 2004.
Completed applications meeting all of the above requirements should be sent to the Graphic Communications International Union, Anthony J. DeAndrade Scholarship Awards, 1900 L St., NW, Washington DC 20036.
The GCIU's Anthony J. DeAndrade scholarships were awarded to two sons and daughters of members in each of five regions of the United States and Canada.

Named after the late president of the IPPAU, the scholarship awards are for $2,000 each, payable in awards of $500 each year.

GCIU Pres. George Tedeschi said "the applicants for this year's scholarships showed outstanding academic potential. We are sure that all of the applicants and the scholarship winners will succeed in their career pursuits."

To be eligible for the DeAndrade scholarships, applicants must be a son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter or legally adopted child of a GCIU member who has more than one year of continuous membership.

Applicants were judged on the basis of their academic record, including SAT or ACT scores and high school grades and activities. Applicants also were required to write an essay for the panel of experienced educators who served as judges for the scholarships.
