GCIU Organizer Robert Robinson, who was involved with the three wins, said negotiations are continuing with management of the News Minor newspaper in Fairbanks, Alaska, and the La Grange in Atlanta. The owner of the Union Directory in Tupolo, Miss., agreed to voluntary recognition and signed a contract. In Fairbanks, according to Robinson, the News Minor’s ad services department, which includes computer pre-press, was organized. The employer brought in a notorious anti-union law firm to battle against low-paid workers, who could not afford health care insurance or a pension plan, who wanted to have union representation along with the press room and commercial departments. Robinson gave credit to the GCIU members who kept advising the non-union workers that it would be wise to vote for GCIU representation. In Atlanta, Robinson said, press, pre-press, technical maintenance, mailroom, inserters, and platemakers voted for GCIU representation because of severe understaffing. As a consequence, he said, “everyone was treated badly. They said too much is too much and decided that they need a union.”
