The scholarship awards are for $2,000 each, payable in awards of $500 each year. The scholarship program is named after the late president of the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants' Union (IPPAU). GCIU Pres. George Tedeschi praised the high potential of all the applicants for this year's scholarships and congratulated the winners. "We hope the academic achievements of these scholarship winners will blossom into successful careers," he said. To be eligible for the DeAndrade scholarships, applicants must be a son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter, or legally adopted child of a GCIU member who has more than one year of continuous membership. An independent committee judged applicants on the basis of their academic record, including SAT or ACT scores, high school grades and activities. Applicants also were required to write an essay for the panel of judges.
