Committee announces scholarship winners

How to apply for next year
The Anthony J. DeAndrade Scholarships are open to applicants who are high school seniors graduating in January or June of 2005 and recent high school graduates who will not have completed more than a half year of college by Sept. 1, 2005. Previous DeAndrade scholarship winners are not eligible.
To be eligible, applicants must be a son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter or legally adopted child of a GCIU member who has more than one year of continuous membership.
Please request application forms from GCIU local union offices. The forms will be available at local union offices by Oct. 1, 2004. All applications must be signed by an elected officer of the parent's local union and must carry the local union's seal.
Applications must be postmarked no later than Feb. 16, 2005.

Completed applications meeting all of the above requirements should be sent to the Graphic Communications International Union, Anthony J. DeAndrade Scholarship Awards, 1900 L St., NW, Washington DC 20036.
Ten talented sons and daughters of GCIU members in five regions of the United States and Canada were awarded Anthony J. DeAndrade scholarships.

The scholarship awards are for $2,000 each, payable in awards of $500 each year. The scholarship program is named after the late president of the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants' Union (IPPAU).

GCIU Pres. George Tedeschi praised the high potential of all the applicants for this year's scholarships and congratulated the winners. "We hope the academic achievements of these scholarship winners will blossom into successful careers," he said.

To be eligible for the DeAndrade scholarships, applicants must be a son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter, or legally adopted child of a GCIU member who has more than one year of continuous membership.

An independent committee judged applicants on the basis of their academic record, including SAT or ACT scores, high school grades and activities. Applicants also were required to write an essay for the panel of judges.
