GCIU staff gains a new
rep and two lead organizers
The GCIU General Board approved appointments by GCIU Pres.
George Tedeschi for two new lead organizers and one new representative to the International
staff.
Tedeschi said the appointments will strengthen the GCIU's organizing and servicing programs.
"The caliber of all of our new field staff is very high, and we are very glad to have them working
with us to help the men and women in the printing, publishing, and packaging industries to better
their wages and working conditions and improve their standard of living."
St. Paul 29C Pres. Nicholas D. Caruso is the new representative. Caruso has been president of the
local since 1991. As president, he was the chief negotiator for 17 bargaining units in the
commercial, newspaper, and specialty segments of the Twin Cities printing industry.
The two new organizers, who were recommended by Organizing Director Bert Haft, are James L.
Admire of Missouri and Sandy Weaver of Georgia.
Before joining the GCIU staff, Admire had been an organizer with the United Steelworkers of
America since 1998. He has worked on organizing campaigns in various private and public
sectors, including printing, telecommunications, metals, pharmaceuticals, waste management,
transportation, and health care.
Weaver was the southern regional organizing coordinator with the United American Nurses and
an AFL-CIO organizer in the southern region. She worked with the GCIU during its organizing
campaign for the Quebecor plant in Dyersburg, Tenn. She also organized for the Communications
Workers of America and the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied
Professionals.
