Local 289M of the central New York and surrounding region holds an informational
picket at the Rome Daily Sentinel newspaper building, where six pressmen have been
without a new contract for 3-1/2 years. Several company-proposed language changes,
according to Local 289M Pres. James F. Quick, would eliminate several pressmen jobs
and allow company officials to fill those positions with whomever they chose. The local
received participation from two Teamsters locals, as well as the Central New York Labor
Council, the New York State United Teachers, and New York United Teachers Retired.
Quick said "this shows the unity that the merger of the GCIU and IBT has brought" Local
289M. At right, a picket seeks public support.
