Las Vegas is GCIU
Convention 2000 site
The Fourth Quadrennial GCIU Convention will be held from Sept. 11
to 15, 2000, at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev., General Board members agreed at the June
session.
Board members also heard reports on the Ontario election results that were disappointing to
Canadian trade unionists.
Regarding the AFL-CIO, GCIU Pres. James J. Norton, a federation vice president and member of
the Executive Council, noted that recently elected Teamsters Pres. James L. Hoffa was installed
as the newest AFL-CIO vice president and council member.
Norton also reported on the first union elections for public employees in Puerto Rico, with the
American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Service Employees International
Union, American Federation of Teachers, and the United Auto Workers the prime unions being
considered for representation in Puerto Rico.
