Philip Zeiger, retired representative, dies

Philip Zeiger
Philip Zeiger, who served as an International representative for 20 years, died June 8 at his home in Surf City, N.J. He was 84.

A Bronx, N.Y., native, Zeiger joined the Amalgamated Lithographers of America Local 1 in 1937. A platemaker, he worked 10 years each at Repro Art and Lange and Price.

Zeiger was instrumental in establishing a pension fund and health benefits for members of the local. He later served as a pension trustee and on Local 1's education and negotiating committees. He trained hundreds of apprentices as director and an instructor at the New York Trade School.

For the International, Zeiger served as an Atlantic region member of the ALA International Council, on the referendum board, and as an International trustee.

Appointed an International representative in August 1956, Zeiger assisted local unions in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New England until his retirement in December 1976.

Zeiger was a member by resolution by the Ocean County Board of Freeholders of the local advisory committee on alcohol and drug abuse. He was a member of the Surf City Volunteer Fire Company and their E.M.A.

A parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Brant Beach, Zeiger was an active volunteer for many years in the church's senior and teenager projects, a member of its Care Givers group, and served as eucharistic minister, lector, and usher.

Survivors include his wife Anne J. Vlad Zeiger; two daughters, Linda Holder of Houston, Texas, and Barbara Capell of Rockford, Tenn.; stepdaughter Dorice Passek of Laurel, Md.; eight grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by his first wife Florence Zeiger.
