Union Label

Products printed by GCIU members may bear the GCIU label or the Allied Printing Trades (APTC) label. These labels are a symbol of the quality, skill, experience, and pride that GCIU members put into their work every day in shops across the United States and Canada. So shop union and make sure that products bear the union label!

The GCIU label is owned and regulated by the International union. International Vice Pres. Robert Lacey is assigned to help local unions monitor use of the union label. International Secy.-Treas. Gerald H. Deneau registers the use of the GCIU label.

The Allied label is regulated and monitored by the International Allied Printing Trades Association and local councils, which are comprised of leaders in the GCIU and other international and local printing trades unions. Secy.-Treas. Deneau serves as secretary-treasurer of the Allied Printing Trades Association.

About the GCIU label

The GCIU union label is registered with the U.S. and Canadian federal governments and in every state and province. The GCIU logo also is a registered trademark of the International union.

The GCIU union label is owned by the International union and can only be used with the permission of the International. Local unions may not on their own grant permission to use the GCIU label.

The Union Label License Agreement establishes the conditions under which the label can be used. Generally, all the work must be done by GCIU members under contract with a company. Covers printed in GCIU shops and bearing the GCIU label may not be used with inserted material that is printed in non-union shops. This constitutes an illegal use of the GCIU label.

A copy of the GCIU contract with a shop that wants to use the GCIU label must be sent to the International as part of the application process before use of the label is granted.

A Label License Agreement automatically terminates upon the expiration of the local union contract. This means that, as of the expiration date, the employer no longer has the right to use the label and any such use is illegal. Local unions should advise the International of any illegal use of the label after the contract expires.

A new Label License Agreement must be signed by the company and recommended by the local (or locals) each time a new contract is negotiated. The International will assign the same shop number to the company as in the expired license agreement if it approves the issuance of a label.

All questions concerning the issuance of a label license should be directed to the office of GCIU Secy.-Treas. Gerald H. Deneau. All questions concerning illegal use and enforcement should be directed to the office of Vice Pres. Robert Lacey.
