GCC/IBT Structure
The Graphic Communications Conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters
(GCC/IBT) is headquartered at 1900 L St., N.W., Washington, D. C. 20036.
The GCC/IBT was previously the Graphic Communications International Union. Following a
membership referendum, the GCIU merged with the Teamsters and became a conference of the
IBT effective Jan. 1, 2005.
The GCC/IBT is a democratic union. Members elect International leaders by mail ballot every
four years. Members of the GCC/IBT's 215 local unions, which are chartered by the Conference,
are ultimately responsible for the organization at all levels. Local union members elect their local
officers and decide their own by-laws.
Delegates to the GCC/IBT conventions, which are held every five years, are selected by
local unions. Convention delegates decide the Conference's constitution. The amendments made
by convention delegates may be subject to a referendum by all members when a supermajority of
local unions call for a membership vote.
GCC/IBT local union officers and members also have the opportunity to participate in industry sector and regional conferences.
The GCC/IBT is a not-for-profit organization. It is funded by member dues, initiation fees, and
charter fees under principles established by the members. Conference funds return to local
unions and members in the form of services for collective bargaining, organizing, safety and
health, research, education, the Graphic Communicator newspaper and GCC/IBT web site, and a
broad array of other assistance that helps GCC/IBT members, retirees, and their families in the
United States and Canada.
Between conventions, the GCC/IBT is governed by the General
Board. By constitutional mandate, General Board members include the Conference
president, secretary-treasurer, four vice presidents "one of whom must be a Canadian . . .
and one of whom must be an American" and 13 General Board members elected from six
regions in the United States and Canada.
